A change of season

Farewell my old friend. The time of departure is at hand. We shared some good times during the six and a half years that our companionship lasted. A considerable part of my life flashes before my eyes. It is hard to believe that it is actually gone now. I still remember those times, the good and the bad ones. I remember the lonely nights and the lonelier mornings. You were always there while I tried to manage through the dark nights and the darker days, while I tried to realize the point of my existence. The life as I knew it was a set of failures and misfortunes, a parade of utter loneliness, a bastion of nothingness. I was then what I was not and was not what I was. Or so I think, but I cannot know for sure. We are what we have been and what we have not been. The future is unknown. We just have to make the best out of it. Back then, however, it was just you and me. Together forever. Or so I thought. Now that is all gone. A page has turned.

My old apartment looks different now that it’s empty. I can see the scuff marks on the floor. The paint on the walls is peeling off. Small pieces of dust float at the corners of the walls. The emptiness fills the void that used to be my home. My life, my all. My thoughts reflect the light that shines through the large window through which I once gazed the world, alone as ever, bored with everything, thoughtless and emotionless. The empty walls echo the past. I drown in memories. I pick up the keys from the window ledge. I should sign them over now. A piece of my soul dies. The future waits ahead. The season has changed.

The flow of the everyday has conquered the river of my thoughts. I sit at my desk, looking through the window and wondering the course of life. I should be working, though. Summer eludes us. I don’t really care. I listen to the silence of the empty corridors. Although I am by myself, I am not alone. Suddenly someone breaks the beauty of the silence. I realize the moment. A new season has begun. I should get back to work.
